Summary

Permanent jewelry is custom-fitted and welded directly onto the wearer, offering a seamless and lasting accessory.

  • Typically features delicate chains without clasps, often worn as bracelets or anklets.
  • Applied using a quick, safe welding process by a trained jeweler.
  • Popular for its symbolic meaning, often shared between friends or loved ones.

Jewelry has been an integral part of human culture for thousands of years. From ancient Egypt to modern times, people have used jewelry to adorn themselves, communicate social status, and express personal style. And while jewelry can come in all shapes, sizes, and materials, one type of jewelry that has gained popularity in recent years is permanent jewelry.

What is permanent jewelry?

Permanent jewelry is a piece of jewelry that is welded together as supposed to clasped together thus making the piece permanently attached.  While the idea of permanent jewelry may sound puzzling and maybe a little terrifying on paper, the process is completely painless, if done correctly, and the reasons people choose to do it are bountiful.

Similar to body piercings and tattoos, permanent jewelry is a form of self-expression and can be used as a vehicle for storytelling. It can also be a tangible way to symbolize the strongest of bonds between friends, family members or lovers. Permanent jewelry can also be the ultimate group bonding experience as part of a graduation, milestone birthday, bachelorette party, Mother’s Day, or “Galentine’s Day” celebration.

Today, permanent jewelry has gained tremendous popularity thanks to social media. On TikTok, it’s common to see fashion influencers promoting permanent jewelry—the whole experience is perfect for capturing on video. As such, jewelry stores and shoppers alike have caught on to the trend, and now even more jewelers are offering it. Plus, permanent jewelry is less of a commitment than a tattoo, not as time-consuming, and completely painless.

How does permanent jewelry work?

The process starts with the jeweler measuring your wrist and the piece of jewelry.  You will consult with the jeweler about what kind of fit you prefer for your soldered jewelry. Do you prefer a looser fit, or a snug fit so it does not wobble around?

Once all the measurements and discussions have finished – the fun part begins. The jeweler uses a professional grade micro-welder to solder both ends of the bracelet together. And yes, they weld it while you are wearing it – but don’t worry, if you are working with a trained jeweler for this type of specialized fitting it is an easier and faster process then you might think.  You may feel a little heat, but nothing painful.

Sparks fly. You’ll love it.

Sterling silver chains are typically not offered as permanent jewelry as they easily tarnish, especially when exposed to body sweat and certain chemicals like chlorine.

Types of permanent jewelry

Also referred to as “zapped” or "forever" jewelry, the most popular type of permanent jewelry is a 14k gold chain bracelet, which can come in a variety of links. It’s possible, too, to get permanent anklets, earrings, and necklaces but they are not as common. Most ear piercings are considered permanent (and there are many different types of ear piercings from which to choose—some may require specific cleaning products and maintenance).

Where to get permanent jewelry

Chances are your local jeweler or one within driving distance is offering the service (often it’s by appointment or promoted as a shopping event to attend with friends). To ensure the quality of the permanent bracelet chain and its proper assembly on your wrist, you should only entrust the zapping task to a jewelry store professional who knows how to do permanent jewelry. In an effort to capitalize on the trend, some hair and nail salons and other establishments are starting to offer permanent bracelets but usually the zapper is using amateur equipment and lacks the expertise necessary to ensure a secure—and lasting—fit.

How much does permanent jewelry cost?

The jeweler will have different chain styles available, including some that are set with gemstones or come with the option of adding a charm. Typically, the price for permanent 14k gold chain options vary depending on your unique measurements and desired fit.

Can you remove permanent jewelry?

If at any time you have a change of heart and wish to have the permanent jewelry removed, you can easily cut a delicate chain with scissors. You may also visit your jeweler to have them remove it and maybe trade the gold in for some cash or to select another style.

How long does permanent jewelry last?

Permanent Jewelry is as permanent as you wish it to be. However, there is an important distinction between Permanent Jewelry and Forever Jewelry. As discussed in the previous section there may be some instances where you will need to have it removed. If no instance occurs or is necessary, then your permanent jewelry will be permanent.

Why get permanent jewelry?

Some good reasons to get into the permanent jewelry trend: You’re constantly misplacing your favorite bracelet, fear the delicate gold chain bracelet you inherited from your grandmother will slip off, or have a unique wrist size, making a custom-fit bracelet extra appealing. Or maybe you’re someone who just loves the novelty—and symbolism—of a precious object that is yours to wear for eternity, never to be removed.

Those who have tried the permanent jewelry trend love that it’s convenient and low maintenance. Since it’s permanently affixed, you don’t have to worry about taking the piece off and putting it on later. And the security of not having to worry about the bracelet breaking or falling off is priceless. Keep in mind that you’ll need to remove your permanent bracelet if you’re getting an MRI scan or an X-Ray, but you may be able to get your bracelet re-welded for a small fee.

If you decide to explore the permanent jewelry trend, don’t forget to get your jewelry insured by a reputable jewelry company like Jewelers Mutual.
