Summary

Shipping jewelry safely requires careful packaging, discreet labeling, and secure delivery methods.

  • Use nondescript packaging to avoid drawing attention to valuable contents.
  • Double-box items with padding to prevent damage and conceal the inner contents.
  • Choose insured, trackable shipping through trusted carriers for added protection.

Mailing a valuable item, like a piece of fine jewelry, may set you on edge. What if it gets lost or stolen?

Want to know the best way to ship jewelry? Follow these eight steps when shipping jewelry to ensure your item ends up at its destination safe and sound.

1. Layer it.

Using multiple layers helps prevent jewelry from getting lost or damaged if the outer package is damaged. First, wrap your jewelry in bubble wrap and put it inside a small box or padded envelope. Finish it off by placing that package inside a slightly larger box or padded envelope.

2. Keep jewelry snug and secure.

Use packing material and heavy-duty shipping tape to seal the large box. Make sure the jewelry is packed tight to avoid shifting and damage in transit.

3. Disguise your package.

Never reveal the contents of your package on the outer label or anywhere on the packaging. It makes for an easy target for thieves.

4. Don’t drop it.

Never use a drop box or delivery service to send your package. Personally take it to the postal service and get a receipt with the tracking number. You can even ask your jeweler to send the item. They may have coverage under their business insurance policy.

5. Request an autograph.

Always request a signature upon delivery. Record the jewelry’s value, the carrier, and tracking number.

6. Mum's the word.

There’s no need to claim that you’re shipping jewelry when dropping the item off at your local post office.

7. Choose first-class registered mail.

It’s the safest way to ship, but it may take longer to get to the desired destination, so plan accordingly.

8. Shipping jewelry insurance.

Jewelry should always be insured, but especially when it's vulnerable, like in the process of trading hands in transit. A Jewelers Mutual Group policy covers shipping both finished jewelry items and loose stones, so whether you're mailing a gift or shipping a stone to a jeweler to be set, you're covered.
