Summary

Losing a ring down the drain is stressful, but with the right steps, you may be able to retrieve it safely.

  • Stop the water immediately to prevent the ring from being washed further down.
  • Check the drain trap by removing the stopper and using a flashlight or grabbing tool.
  • Call a plumber if DIY methods don’t work or if the ring is deeper in the plumbing.

All too often we get phone calls that start out, “I was taking a shower, and ...”

What comes next? You guessed it - a story about how a piece of jewelry was suddenly washed down the drain. The simplest way to avoid a lost ring down the drain is to not wear jewelry in the shower. But, accidents happen, and we're here to help. Read on to learn steps on how to get a ring out of a bathtub drain.

1. Turn off the shower.

2. Unscrew the strainer and use a flashlight to try to spot the diamond.

3a. Take a wet/dry vacuum, empty the canister, set the vacuum cleaner for 'wet' use (to avoid any risk of electrocution), then gently vacuum inside the top of the drain. You should suck your ring up into your vacuum.

3b. If you don’t have a wet/dry vacuum, try using a hanger reshaped into a hook. Dip the hook into the drain and attempt to fish out the ring.

If after all that sweat (and no doubt tears), you’re STILL not able to retrieve your jewelry, it may be time to file a claim. Jewelers Mutual Group policyholders can feel relief knowing that their jewelry is covered from mishaps like this.

Haven't insured your ring yet? We can help with that too. Check your rate by clicking the button below.
